My buddy picked up a house near Bent Creek this spring and had me over to ride. Rolled straight from his place out to the trails — no shuttle, no parking lot, no driving around. Good dirt, good company, solid afternoon.

The Area: Bent Creek Experimental Forest
Bent Creek sits just southwest of Asheville, tucked between the Blue Ridge Parkway and Lake Powhatan. It's one of those rare spots that genuinely has something for everyone — whether you're a serious shredder looking to string together miles of singletrack, a casual rider out for some fresh air, or a hiker who just wants to wander through old growth forest for a few hours.
The trail network is extensive, well-maintained, and accessible. It's close to the Arboretum, backs up to the Blue Ridge Parkway, and sits just minutes from Brevard Road — which means if you're visiting with non-riders, there's no shortage of ways to split the group and still have a great afternoon.
For mountain bikers, the variety is the thing. Bent Creek has beginner-friendly loops, flowing intermediate singletrack, and enough technical terrain to keep experienced riders honest. It's the kind of place you can ride a dozen times and find something new.

Gear
Rolled out with the Kitloader and a pack — exactly what a spontaneous afternoon ride calls for. The Kitloader stays packed between rides, which means when a buddy calls and conditions are dialed, there's no delay. You just go.
Popular Bent Creek Trails
Bent Creek has a lot of trail options. Here are some of the most-ridden routes in the system — ranging from mellow and accessible to technical and demanding.
Wolf Branch Trail
A good one to start with, or link into a bigger day. Wolf Branch runs through the flat stream bottom at the base of the ridge — mountain laurel tunnels, ferns, a few rocky sections and creek crossings. It's the kind of trail that feels easygoing but keeps you honest. Connects naturally into the upper elevation trails, so most riders pass through it at some point whether they mean to or not.
Green's Lick
The one everyone talks about at Bent Creek, and for good reason. It's a purpose-built descent — nearly 800 feet over two and a half miles — loaded with rollers, berms, and enough loose rock to keep your attention. Not gnarly in the Pisgah sense, but speeds get up there fast. Earn it on the climb, then let it go on the way down. If you ride Bent Creek and skip Green's Lick, you did it wrong.
Ingles Field Gap
For when you want to earn it. Ingles Field Gap climbs up toward the Parkway and rewards the effort with views and a solid descent. This is where the experienced riders gravitate when they want more than flow — technical, sustained, and satisfying. View on Trailforks →
Something for Everyone
This is worth saying directly: Bent Creek is not just a mountain bike destination. It's a genuinely great outdoor area for anyone in your group, regardless of whether they ride.
Hikers have access to miles of forest trail. The North Carolina Arboretum sits right on the edge of the property — a legitimate destination on its own. The Blue Ridge Parkway is minutes away. If someone in your crew wants to explore on foot while you ride, Bent Creek makes that easy.
And when you're done — riders and non-riders alike — the post-ride situation is well handled.
Local Rec: Papa's & Beer 🌮
If you're wrapping up a ride and want a cold one and some tacos, Papa's & Beer is the move. Quick drive from the trailhead, solid spot for an after-ride debrief.

The Post-Ride Feel
Rode out the back door, spent a few hours in some of the best dirt in western NC, and came back with the legs worked in the right way and the head clear. The best kind of afternoon.
If you're in the Asheville area and haven't spent time at Bent Creek, put it on the list. Riders, hikers, casual visitors — there's a reason locals love it.
