Evening rides after rain are a gamble. This one paid off.
Rain came through in the morning and I had the afternoon free. By the time the sky cleared it was later than I'd planned — solo lap, short window. Threw the KITLOADER 40 prototype in the truck and headed to Mills River.

The Area: Mills River / Pisgah District
Mills River sits in the Pisgah District, tucked into a network of hardwood ridges and stream drainages that feed into the French Broad. The trail system here is a mix of gravel connector roads, ridge traverses, and proper descents — the kind of place that rewards knowing your way around.
The soil holds moisture well without getting greasy, which made it a natural call after morning rain. Conditions like this don't last — you go when the window opens.
Wash Creek Road
Gravel climb to start — nothing technical, just gaining elevation through the trees. The kind of road that gives your legs a chance to wake up and your head a chance to slow down before the trail starts asking questions.
Spencer Gap
Spencer Gap is where it transitions from road to singletrack. Undulating climb-traverse — the grade shifts constantly, so there is no settling into a rhythm. You are always reading what is next. It does a good job of getting your brain dialed before Trace Ridge.
Trace Ridge
This is why you came. Trace Ridge is a fast descent with good sightlines — the kind of trail that rewards letting off the brakes when you know it. Turns are well-supported, mild chunk throughout. Nothing that will catch you out if you are paying attention.
There is one drop near the top worth knowing about before you are in it. Well-built, easy at trail speed — momentum is your friend here. That said, do not roll into it slow on a first lap.
Tonight the conditions made it even better. Tacky dirt and dry roots — high grip from top to bottom. One of those evenings where everything clicks and you find yourself braking less than you thought you would.
Gear
Running the KITLOADER 40 prototype with the flat kit strap. Short ride, so the hip pack stayed at the truck — the bag had everything needed and nothing extra. That is the point.
Conditions
Morning rain, evening ride. Tacky dirt. Dry roots. High grip from the top of Trace Ridge all the way to the lot. If you are watching the forecast and see rain in the morning with a clear afternoon, this is the move.
Quick Notes
-
Morning rain to evening hero dirt is a reliable formula here
-
Trace Ridge drop near the top: easy at trail speed, respect it on a first lap
-
Spencer Gap shifts grade constantly — it is a traverse as much as a climb
-
Well-supported turns on Trace Ridge but read the trail before pushing pace
-
Short enough that you can leave the hip pack at the truck
Solo laps have a way of resetting things. An hour in the Pisgah on good dirt is usually all it takes.
